Riviera School success
Riviera Elementary School third graders Macy Gillett and Ella Kossoff raised $569 dollars for the Red Cross hurricane Sandy relief with a New York and New Jersey Booth at the International day Fair last Friday. The school’s student council donated $100 to the cause. Direct donations by cash or credit card are still being accepted. Email pamelagillett@gmail.com for more information.
Trash-free lunch challenge
Sixteen L.A. schools are attempting to cut their lunchtime trash by 70 percent in the second trash-free lunch challenge. The competition, sponsored by the Sanitation Districts of L.A. County and created by the environmental non-profit group Grades of Green, teaches kids how to reduce trash by switching to reusable lunch containers, water bottles with cloth napkins.
“The amount of trash we produce as a society is staggering,” said Lisa Coppedoge, Grades of Green director. “But it doesn’t have to be that way.”
Although the deadline has passed to compete in this year’s challenge, any school can still initiate a trash-free lunch program. Three Redondo Beach schools, Beryl Heights Elementary, Birney Elementary and Washington Elementary, are participating in the competition. Visit www.gradesofgreen.org for more information. ER
