Beach volleyball players ready for summer competition on the sand

With the Memorial Day weekend unofficially signifying the start of summer, eyes turn to the sand and the highly competitive sport of beach volleyball.

Many top, local youths will compete in the AAU California Regional Championships on Sunday, June 10 at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Competition includes Boys 14U and Girls 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U divisions.

After leading Mira Costa High School to a 6th straight Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League and 2nd State championship, senior Piper Monk-Heidrich will be honing her skills before playing for UCLA in the fall.

Competing in the 18U division, on May 6 she won the AAU National Classic presented by Tropic Swim with partner Abby Van Winkle (San Clemente) and on April 8 she was victorious at the Hermosa Beach Open with partner Jaden Whitmarsh (Rancho Santa Fe).

Other local top players on the AAU tour include Manhattan Beach’s Kelly Belardi, Ava Gallien, Natalie Myszkowski, Kate Reilly along with Redondo Beach standouts Ava Kirunchyk and Savannah Standage.

Bringing the top college and high school female beach volleyball players together for stiff competition, the 3rd annual E Invitational takes places Friday and Saturday, June 15-16 in Hermosa Beach.

One college and one high school player from a field of 32 and 48 players, respectively, will win gold in the event hosted by Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Eric Fonoimoana. Visit Einvitational.com for more information.

Open to players ages 10 and up, the Father’s Day Beach Volleyball Tournament takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, June 17 at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Action takes place on the short course with four-person matches held on the long court. Registration is $50 per person (18 and Under Divisions) and $100 (four-person team). All participants will receive a T-shirt and other giveaways. Call (310) 802-5448 for more details.
