Baywatch Community Calendar 3-24-22

Event Spotlight: The South Bay Stories Show, a mix of live music and storytelling, is returning for a seventh year. Two performances are scheduled, one at 7:30 p.m. on April 2 and the other at 1:30 p.m. on April 3, both at Second Story Theater at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. The show features true, personal stories told by the people who lived them. The themes of this year’s production are growing up, living through life’s changes and romance. The storytellers include Steve Goldstein, a civic leader in Redondo Beach; South Bay horticulturist Mike Garcia; Tonya McKenzi and local stand-up comic Chuck McPeak. Composer and accordionist Stanley Oropesa will perform a musical story and musical interludes. The producer is Jim Mueller, a storyteller himself. Live theater

The El Camino College Theater Department’s production of the rock musical, “Spring Awakening,” is nearing an end. The final performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. March 25 and 26, and 3 p.m. March 27 at the campus theater. Tickets are $15-$25 and may be purchased at www.centerforthearts.org. Seating is limited, with Covid-19 safety protocols in place. All theater guests must provide proof of full vaccination and complete a health-screening questionnaire at the time of ticket purchase. El Camino College is located at 16007 Crenshaw Blvd., Torrance. Campus parking is free for the musical, with no permit required.

Anti-hate walk

El Camino College invites the public to join students, faculty and staff for a CommUnity Walk Against Hate. The one-mile walk around campus begins at 10 a.m. on the steps in front of the Administration Building at the Crenshaw Boulevard campus entrance. Antiques

The Torrance Antique Street Faire is open from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. The fair features 80 vintage and artisan sellers. There will be an antique appraisal booth, $3 per item, and DJ Ozzie will be spinning tunes in the park. Classical music concert

The vocal group Joanna Medawar Nachef Singers will perform Mozart’s “The Coronation Mass.” The concert is at 7 p.m. at the James Armstrong Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Drive, Torrance. JMNS will be accompanied by a professional orchestra and four soloists, including soprano Hila Plitmann, mezzo-soprano Erin Wood, tenor Todd Strange, and baritone Abdiel Gonzalez, under the baton of Joanna Nachef, founder and artistic director. JMNS has dedicated 20 percent of the concert’s ticket sales to the people of Lebanon in the face of that nation’s deteriorating economic situation. Staged reading

Kentwood Players will present a staged reading of “A Complicated Hope,” an original play by John Mabey, at 7 p.m. at the Westchester Playhouse, located at 8301 Hindry Ave. in Westchester. Admission is pay-what-you-can at the door. Guests ages 12 and up must show proof of vaccination and photo ID. Masks are recommended but not required.

The Palos Verdes Art Center is offering a free talk and tour of “Water, Earth & Fire” with curator Jo Lauria. Book signing, reading

The Hermosa Beach Historical Society & Museum is presenting a reading of “Punk: Photos from a Fan’s Perspective” with author and photographer Kevin Salk, part of the historical society’s “Happy Hour with History” series. 6:30 p.m. Guests may purchase Salk’s book with online tickets.
