
The Hermosa Beach marquee that heralded some of the biggest nights of live music in recent South Bay history is now announcing something entirely different: “Saint Rocke is for sale.” The club is the first iconic South Bay venue to fall victim to pandemic economics. Owner Allen Sanford, who founded Saint Rocke in 2008 predicts many more businesses will follow and says the community may not yet understand how profound a shift is about to occur.

In one of the most consequential and anticipated decisions of the year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last week that teachers at schools affiliated with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Hermosa Beach and St. James Catholic Church in Redondo Beach were barred from filing employment discrimination claims over their terminations.

Restaurants, law firms, day care centers and churches are among the hundreds of entities in the South Bay to have received loans from the federal Paycheck Protection Program enacted to boost the economy amid the downturn associated with the coronavirus pandemic, according to data released by the government this week.
