In the summer of 2017, the closure of lanes on Vista Del Mar mobilized South Bay residents like few issues in memory. The change brought residents of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach to their respective city councils, complaining of commutes that had grown 45 minutes longer overnight. The problem? None of the councils could do anything about it, at least not on their own. That’s where Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn came in.

The Beach Cities honored Hahn at Hermosa’s City Council meeting Tuesday night, thanking her for her role in resolving the situation. Following more than a month of outreach to South Bay cities and discussions with the City of Los Angeles, where Vista Del Mar runs, and various county agencies, Hahn engineered a compromise that reopened lanes.

Los Angeles closed one lane in each direction on the popular commuting arterial just after Memorial Day, based on the advice of its city attorney, who was concerned that the busy road was dangerous for beach-bound pedestrians. It relocated parking to the west side but had to make up for it by cutting out road space to comply with the Coastal Commission about beach access regulations. Hahn convinced the county to open more free and reduced-fare beach parking, which allowed lanes to be restored while eliminating parking on the eastern roadside.

“Without your involvement, it either would not have been resolved, or it would have taken years to resolve,” said Hermosa councilmember Hany Fangary.
