Hermosa Beach Police Beat

Champagne Theft

Thieves made off with a New Yearโ€™s haul of champagne from a Hermosa supermarket last Friday night, police said.

About 9:45 p.m., two suspects loaded several cases of champagne into a shopping cart at Vons, near the intersection of 16th Street and Pacific Coast Highway, police said. The suspects pushed the cart through the storeโ€™s front sliding doors without paying for the sparkling wine.

A third suspect was waiting in a car outside, police said. The suspects loaded the champagne into the car and fled.

The three suspects remain at large.

Clerk Assaulted

An intoxicated man was arrested last Monday night after assaulting the clerk at a South Hermosa liquor store, police said.

The suspect entered Dawn to Dusk Liquor, near the intersection of Hermosa and Herondo avenues, about 9:30 p.m., police said. After attempting to purchase alcohol, he assaulted the clerk, who summoned authorities.

Police arrested and booked the man on suspicion of public intoxication and assault.

Attempted Auto Theft

A man was caught on videotape attempting to steal two work vehicles in South Hermosa last Thursday, police said.

The man approached the 600 block of Cypress street about 6 a.m., and used a screwdriver to force open the driverโ€™s side door of a white van belonging to a plumbing company housed in the area, police said. The suspect was able to open the door and enter the vehicle, but could not get it to start.

The suspect then moved on to another white van belonging to the plumber, and was again able to gain access but failed to start the vehicle, police said. Shortly after this, a car drove by and the thief fled the area.

Breaking and Entering

A suspect burgled a home in North Hermosa in the early morning hours last Monday, police said.

The suspect apparently opened an unlocked rear sliding door to gain entry to the home in the 2500 block of Manhattan Avenue, police said. Once inside, the burglar took an X-Box video game system and a pair of gold earrings.

The owner of the home was not present at the time, and reported the theft to police on arriving in the morning.
