Into the sunset
Services were held Monday for Art Rutherford, a dedicated American Red Cross volunteer and former member of the city’s Emergency Preparedness Advisor Commission, who died last week following a battle with cancer.
Rutherford worked in aerospace, and served as a district duty officer and Disaster Action Team leader for the South Bay District of the Red Cross, managing local disaster shelters and larger shelters such as those used in the 2003 and 2007 San Bernardino wildfires.
He also taught several Red Cross classes for volunteers, including shelter operations and mass care. Following Hurricane Katrina, he helped train volunteers to aid the Gulf Coast.
“The American Red Cross has lost a dear friend and advocate for those affected by disasters. It is with great sadness that I inform you that Art Rutherford passed yesterday,” Corey Eide, an assistant director, emailed to Red Cross members and volunteers.
“As many of you know, Art continued to maintain his involvement and passion for the American Red Cross while aggressively fighting cancer. Art’s sense of humor and undying commitment to this organization has been enjoyed and appreciated by so many throughout the years of his involvement,” Eide wrote.
“Please join the larger family of the American Red Cross as our thoughts and prayers are with his Kathy.”
Blood drive
HealthSource Chiropractic and Progressive Rehab host an American Red Cross blood drive noon to 6 p.m. Friday, April 8, in the Ralph’s Shopping Center, PCH and Aviation Boulevard, to help replenish dwindling supplies.
Volunteer donors are encouraged to call 310-798-3227 to make an appointment, or they can just stop by the Bloodmobile.
For those who don’t wish to give blood, Dr. Matt Costantino of HealthSource Hermosa Beach is offering free screenings for problems such as low back pain, headaches, neck pain, shoulder or arm pain, bulging or herniated discs, leg pain and numbness, for a $10 donation to the Red Cross.
