Costa’s boys water polo team sees streak end at three

Competing in the 42nd South Bay Tournament, three-time defending champion Mira Costa was denied a four-peat when Peninsula defeated the Mustangs 10-5 in the final of the tournament that was held at Mira Costa and Redondo high schools.

Josh Huttinger and Justin Pratt scored two goals each and Matt Thornton added one in the loss to Peninsula, who won the tournament for the first time.

After defeating Santa Monica 7-5, Redondo downed Chadwick 7-6 in the fifth-place game. Adam Rudow and Skyler Ulrich scored two goals apiece in each of the two games.

After scoring three goals against Santa Monica, Jonathan Ortiz scored once in the final. Spencer Peak and Ashton DeRojas added one goal each and goalkeeper Jacob Melendez recorded 12 saves against Chadwick.

The young Mustangs continued to battle back before the Sea Kings ran out the clock for an 8-7 victory at Mira Costa.

Jimmy Bissel, Dan Burdiak, Dylan Colbert, Miles Guerrero, Josh Huttinger, Cody Kelley and Matt Thornton each scored one goal for the Mustangs.

The two teams shared the Bay League title last season and both are ranked in the top ten in CIF Division 3 with the Sea Kings at No. 6 and the Mustangs in the No. 8 spot. Peninsula is ranked No. 7.

Mira Costa continues its grueling non-league schedule hosting Montebello (No. 5 in Division 2) Thursday at 3 p.m. before home games against Division 3 adversaries La Canada (No. 4) Friday at 3 p.m. and Damien (No. 2) in a Saturday contest at 2 p.m.

In a non-league contest Tuesday, Redondo lost to visiting Culver City 11-9. Rudow recorded four goals, Ortiz scored three times and Wyatt Bettis and Ulrich each added one  for the Sea Hawks.

Redondo opens league play Thursday at Peninsula before hosting Palos Verdes on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Both games are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
