Mira Costa boys rally to defeat rival Redondo on the hardwood

Mira Costa (16-7, 3-4) remained in the playoff hunt overcoming a 14-point deficit in the second half to defeat visiting Redondo 67-57. Justin Strings recorded 16 of his 18 points in the second half, sophomore Chase Crandall added 18 points and five rebounds and Cole Feaster chipped in with 15 points to propel the Mustangs.

Redondo (9-13, 1-6) was led by Ian Fox, who scored 16 points and Derek Biale who tallied 15 points.

The Sea Hawks host West Friday and Bishop Montgomery in a non-league contest Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Redondo concludes Bay League action Tuesday against visiting Palos Verdes and next Thursday at league-leading Leuzinger.

Mira Costa wraps up its league season with a home game Friday against Leuzinger and road games on Tuesday and Thursday against Peninsula and Palos Verdes, respectively.

Girls Basketball

Redondo (12-12, 4-3) had little trouble beating host Mira Costa Tuesday, handing the Mustangs its sixth league loss with a 51-34 victory. Inara Nyingifa scored 16 points, Brittany Stafford recorded 12 points and five rebounds and Taylor Smith added 11 points for the Sea Hawks who host West Friday, Palos Verdes Tuesday and finish league play next Thursday at Leuzinger.

Mira Costa (10-14, 1-6) was led by Cameryn Chan and Ashley Reese who scored six points apiece. The Mustangs conclude Bay League competition hosting Leuzinger Friday before traveling to Peninsula Tuesday and Palos Verdes next Thursday.

Boys Soccer

Host Mira Costa (8-7-7, 2-3-2) defeated rival Redondo 4-1 Tuesday behind Grant Southwood’s two goals. Jess Chamberlain and Michael deVirgilio also scored for the Mustangs who host Leuzinger Friday and travel to the hill to face Peninsula and Palos Verdes on Tuesday and Thursday.

Redondo hosts West Friday, Palos Verdes Tuesday and travels to Leuzinger next Thursday in its Bay League finale.

Girls Soccer

Mira Costa (5-2 in league) dropped into second place after host Redondo (14-4-4, 4-3) upset the Mustangs 2-1 Tuesday. Samantha Witteman scored both goals, Megan Perkins had two assists and goalkeeper Erinn Middo recorded eight saves for the Sea Hawks who take on West Friday in a 7 p.m. contest. Redondo travels to Palos Verdes Tuesday and hosts Leuzinger next Thursday.

Mira Costa plays at Leuzinger Friday at 4 p.m. before hosting Peninsula Tuesday and Palos Verdes next Thursday in the final Bay League games.

Wrestling

The Bay League finals will be held at West beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.
