During his Opening Day installation remarks on Sunday, King Harbor Yacht Club’s 2011 Commodore Barry Anderson noted that for him and his wife Shirley, King Harbor is not just a boating club, but also a family. He and his wife Shirley were married at the club by Reverend Tim Schaeffer, a fellow member. (“Yes, it’s possible to be a club member and a reverend,” Anderson quipped.).
Evidence of the club’s family orientation was apparent in the recognition of the club’s youth program.
Club member and Mira Costa High School racing captain Jordan Martucci was awarded the Yacht Racing Union of Southern California Youth Award for his participation in 55 regattas, including the Junior Olympics, and for founding the New Channel Club, which offers sailing opportunities to underprivileged kids.
Martucci was also presented with the Sportsman of the Year Award by Dana Hutton of the Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs Association.
The Yachtsman of the Year Award was presented to Mick Schlens and the Commodore’s Appreciation Award was given to Judge Advocate Kari Keidser.
Opening day also provided an occasion to unveil the new guest dock built by Ron Schmidt and Steve Kight of Bay Shore and Barrett Dock Company, and the Club’s new Catalina Island Club House.
Last year the club gave up its beach shelter at the Isthmus after its lease was tripled. To replace the shelter, club members Jeff Wolfe, Joe Vullo and Dennis Groat built a clubhouse on wheels. This summer, the club will set up the trailer at the Isthmus’ Buffalo Park or at the Bandstand Park. The converted trailer is solar powered and carries 30 gallons of propane for its two barbecues, a 50 gallon water tank, four tables, 24 chairs, and a fold-out bar with the recipe for Buffalo Milks posted above the blender.
