AJ Shoemaker, junior at Loyola High School completed his Eagle Scout project, creating a native garden outside of the Manhattan Beach Historical Society, replicating how the town landscaping used to look.

“It’s a great reminder to people what used to be in Manhattan Beach before all the development,” he said. “It used to be a very different place.”

First, he ripped out all the old plants and put new fertilizer in the old soil. He then planted and watered the new plants, finishing it up this past weekend by adding sand to make it look like a dune. He began the project in February, and has put in about 50 hours of work.

Shoemaker is a part of Troupe 849, which has about 60 members. About 10 each year complete their Eagle Scout project, he said.
