Woman injured in home intrusion

A woman suffered minor injuries after being attacked by a man broke into her Sand Section home early Saturday morning.

The assault occurred about 1:15 a.m. at a residence in the 400 block of 15th Street. The woman was asleep when an unknown suspect entered her bedroom and punched her multiple times, said Kristie Colombo, community affairs officer for the Manhattan Beach Police Department. The woman sustained injuries to her face and shoulder in the attack but refused transportation to a hospital for treatment when officers arrived in response to her 911 call.

The woman was not sexually assaulted during the attack and nothing was stolen from the home, Colombo said, making the motive for the crime something of a mystery.

“Unfortunately we just don’t know that. [The attack] was the only thing that happened—no sexual assault, nothing was taken. So I can’t speculate on what the person was thinking,” she said.

The assailant appears to have entered through either a door or open window. The home’s front door revealed no signs of forced entry, but police reports indicated that one of the windows may have been “tampered with,” and that others may have been left open.

Police are going over surveillance cameras in the area, but have so far been unable to find any footage of the suspect, and are able to describe him only as a man wearing dark clothing.

The neighborhood has not experienced any similar incidents recently, Colombo said.

“There has been nothing like this in the area or even in neighboring cities,” she said. “Something like this in Manhattan Beach is very unusual.”
