After winning the Bay League title last week with its 27th consecutive victory, the top-ranked Redondo’s girls volleyball team received a bye in Tuesday’s opening round of the CIF Southern Section/Ford Division 1-AA Championships presented by Farmers.
Redondo (32-3) hosts Newport Harbor (16-9) at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The Sea Hawks defeated the Sailors 25-21, 25-21 during the Dave Mohs Tournament in September.
The winner of the Redondo-Newport Harbor match will face the winner between No. 8 Vista Murrieta and No. 9 Dana Hills in the quarterfinals on Saturday. The semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday followed by the championship matches on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Santiago Canyon College. All matches excluding the finals are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Bay League runner-up Mira Costa (19-11) is ranked tenth in Division 1-AA and will face a hostile environment when it plays at No. 7 Orange Lutheran (16-8) on Thursday. The contest is a rematch of last season’s second-round contest where the Mustangs were eliminated by the Lancers in five sets.
The Mustangs turned in a complete performance Tuesday defeating visiting Mission Viejo 25-16, 25-22, 25-19 in the first round. Grayce Campbell had a team-high 18 kills with 11 digs and Kelsey McIntire added nine kills and three blocks.
Setter Corie Bain had another stellar match with 35 assists, five blocks and three kills. Lexi Millington added eight kills and eight digs, Brooke Feld had 13 digs, Carley Muller recorded 12 digs and Keala Rusher contributed with two aces.
