Lacrosse stars honored

US Lacrosse recently announced its boys’ US Lacrosse High School All-American and All-Academic teams. Mira Costa attacker Dakota Randall was named as an All-American while his teammate, midfielder Christopher O’Brien was selected to the All-Academic team.

According to US Lacrosse, an All-American is a player who exhibits superior skills and techniques and possesses exceptional game sense and knowledge. He is one of the best players in the United States, while also embodying excellent sportsmanship.

A fundraiser is being held to support Manhattan Beach snowboarder Indigo Monk in her dream of qualifying for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. An evening for the entire family including a talent show, wine tasting, door prizes and silent auction will take place Friday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. at the Neptunian Women’s Club, 920 Highland Ave. in Manhattan Beach. Local volleyball stars shine

Manhattan Beach’s Michael Mullahey was selected as Volleyball Magazine’s National High School Volleyball Player of the Year. Playing setter for Loyola High School, Mullahey led his team to a 36-2 record and a national ranking of third. Loyola held the No. 1 spot in the nation for nine weeks before Mira Costa defeated the Cubs in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 final. Other South Bay players recognized were Mullahey’s teammate Parker Boehle (Honorable Mention) and Mira Costa standouts Brooks Varni (First Team), Jackson Carr (First Team), Karl Acres (Honorable Mention), Christopher Orenic (Honorable Mention) and Scott Stephanoff (Honorable Mention) who helped the Mustangs capture the CIF Southern California Division 2 title and a No. 2 ranking in the nation.

Manhattan Beach volleyball players Grace Campbell, Olivia Rodberg and Keala Rusher placed second in the 15 Gold Division at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Rusher was named to the All-Tournament team.

Wheelmen dominate at state

The South Bay Wheelmen’s Masters bicycle racers dominated the State Track Championships held recently at the Home Depot Velodrome in Carson.

Kurt Sato won the Match Sprints 55+, the Men’s 500M Time Trial 55+ and the Men’s Team Sprint 55+ along with team mates Steve Sawelson and Bill Zeigler. Sato placed third in the Men’s Scratch Race and Sawelson finished second in the Men’s 500M Time Trial 55+.

Robert Minn won the Men’s 3K Pursuit and Andrew King won the Men’s Points Race 50+ and placed second in the Men’s Scratch Race.

Tara Unverzagt won the Women’s Match Sprint, the Women’s 500M Time Trial, the Women’s 2K Pursuit, the Women’s Scratch Race, and the Women’s Points Race. She was also on the winning Women’s Team Pursuit along with CJ Boyenger and Shane Ellis.

Monica King came in second in the Women’s Team Sprint, the Women’s 500M Time Trial and the Women’s Team Pursuit along with Melanie Phillips and Renee Fenstermacher. King also placed third in the Women’s Scratch Race and Women’s Points Race.

Other South Bay Wheelmen placing in team competitions were Rick Lillleberg, Bruce Steele, Sydney Duck (1st, Men’s Team Sprint 65+ and Men’s Team Pursuit 65+ with Mike Fleming); Andrew King, Jay Wolkoff, Kurt Bickel, Mark Ulrich (2nd, Men’s Team Pursuit 45+) and Robert Minn, Mark Neumann, Robert Spalding, John Bergman (3rd, Men’s Team Pursuit 45+).

The South Bay Wheelmen is a competitive cycling club based in Redondo Beach. It has weekly training rides and hosts several race series. It also has slower-paced rides for those not interested in racing. For more information, visit www.southbaywheelmen.org.
