Memorial Day in Veteran’s Park

Redondo Beach will observe Memorial Day at its Veterans Memorial, at Veterans Park, on May 27 at 1 p.m. The ceremony, which features a traditional retirement and replacement of the memorial’s American flag, will be keynoted by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge John Longeran, a veteran of the U.S. Army. Speeches from other military dignitaries and elected officials will also be featured.

The Redondo Union High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC, the Coastal Naval Sea Cadets and local Boy Scouts are supporting the event. Music will be provided by the Redondo High Wind Ensemble under the direction of Raymundo Vizcarra.

Memorial Day ceremonies are hosted by the City of Redondo Beach, the Redondo Beach Veterans Memorial Task Force, and the Redondo Elks Lodge, which will host a barbecue after the event.

Street improvements okayed

The Redondo Beach City Council approved approximately $4 million in street improvements to take place across its five districts over the next two years.

Improvements are likely to begin in August 2019 and take about four months to complete. Further slurry-seal improvements were approved as part of the package, to resurface recently-repaired streets, but the timeline for those repairs was not available.

Council Chambers to get face-lift

Redondo Beach will soon renovate its aging Council Chambers to bring it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, regrading and leveling out the existing downward slope within the audience.

The project will also replace carpeting, audience seating, and modernize old technology. The improvements will include a new video screen behind the dais and replace aging broadcast facilities.

The project will cost approximately $2.03 million, and is projected to begin in early 2020, during which Council meetings will be held in the Main Library conference room.
