Soccer: AYSO Area 1-D completed its annual League Championships with Region 18 (Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach) capturing four of six division championships. Burgandy won the Boys U14 division, The Shadows won the Girls U14 title, the Blue Crew took top honors in the Boys U12 division and the Stingrays won the Girls U10 competition, Region 18 dominated its neighbors from El Segundo, Westchester, Hawthorne and North and South Redondo Beach. All four teams advanced to the Sectional Championships in Riverside at the AB Brown Complex.
Track & Field: Mira Costa High School Track & Field will be hosting its first Youth Meet for boys and girls grades K-8 on Sunday, Mar. 15. The $15 entry fee gets each competitor into up to three events and includes a T-shirt. Races will be by grade and by sex. Paddleboard: The Lanakila Classic for outriggers, surf skis, SUPs and paddleboards will take place Saturday, Feb. 28 at Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach. The event includes 3-mile and 6-mile SUP races, a kid’s course, short course and long course. Entry fee is $25 ($5 for mini course) and includes lunch provided by Salt Creek Grille. Football: Redondo Beach Youth Football & Cheer has announced that the 2015 RBYFC Tackle Head Coach application period is open. Cycling: The 3rd Annual Tour de Pier, a unique fundraising event that brings one of the hottest indoor fitness activities – stationary cycling – to the Manhattan Beach Pier, takes place Sunday, May 17. Running: The annual Village Runner St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Community Walk will take place Sunday, March 15 beginning at 8 a.m. The 5K race starts and finishes in front of Village Runner, 1811-A Catalina Ave. in Redondo Beach and includes a t-shirt, chip timing, age division awards and cash prizes to the top three overall male and female runners. The Leprechaun Dash for the Gold follows the 5K where kids ages 4-12 will compete in appropriate age groups. Entry fees are $40 for the 5K; $30 for the Kids Dash. Surfing: The South Bay Boardriders continues its South Bay Surf Series on Saturdays. The series features all age groups, from the under-9 Micro Grom Division to the over-50 Legends Division. Participants receive t-shirts and other goodies and finalists from each division win prize packages. Surf Series ratings winner receive prizes such as free trips, surfboards, wetsuits and more. Contests scheduled: Feb. 28 – E.T. Surf at 26th. St., Manhattan Beach; Mar. 28 – Becker at 26th St.; April 25 – Spyder at Manhattan Beach Pier. The championships will be held in May. Swimming: Southern California Aquatics (SCAQ), the largest Masters swimming program in the United States holds a variety of programs at Redondo Union High School. SCAQ holds weekly stroke clinics and ocean workouts as preparation for triathlons, ocean competitions and pool meets with practices fitting most work schedules for swimmers of every level. Beach Volleyball: The Hermosa Beach 4-Person Coed Volleyball League on Tuesday nights begins March 24. Matches are the best two-out-of-three and player from 6-8 p.m. on the north side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. Registration must be made at the Community, 710 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach prior to league start date. Cost is $240 per team plus $5 per non-HB resident.
