Hermosa Beach About Town

Draft EIRs available

Draft Environmental Impact reports for two major projects in the city have become available for public comment.

Portions of the draft EIR for the reconstruction of North School became available Aug. 3, and the Hermosa Beach City School District will be accepting comments until Sept. 17. The district initially circulated a draft EIR late last year but, in response to criticism from residents and city officials, asked its environmental consultant to re-examine portions of its assessment, including those involving traffic.

At an Aug. 8 board meeting, school district officials said the new document includes a more detailed analysis, intended to better capture the impacts of concentrated cars during pick-up and drop-off times. No public meeting to discuss the revised report has been announced, but Superintendent Pat Escalante said the district was looking at possible dates. Comments can be submitted to Paula Montalbo, the district’s business manager, at school district headquarters, or via email to pmontalbo@hbcsd.org.

The draft EIR for the Strand and Pier hotel and retail project becomes available Aug. 16, and the developer will be accepting comments until Oct. 15. Comments should be submitted to Hermosa’s Community Development Department, or via email to hotelEIR@hermosabch.org. A public meeting on the project will be held Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
