About Town in Redondo Beach: Week of Sept. 5

Big Blue Whale Bash

The American Cetacean Society Los Angeles Chapter, Voyager Excursions, King Harbor Association, Redondo Beach Marina, Captain Kidd’s and Body Glove have partnered to bring a new Big Blue Whale Bash to the Redondo Beach Marina. The bash, which aims to educate the community about whales and encourage safe whale-watching practices, will feature a life-sized inflatable blue whale, cruises aboard Voyager, booths set up by local marine science institutions and organizations, crafts and activities for families and visitors of all ages, and marine mammal experts who will give talks and answer questions.

The King Harbor Association will sponsor a chalk art challenge; the first 100 artists to sign up will get free chalk. The Big Blue Whale Bash begins at noon on Sunday, Sept. 8 and lasts until 5 o’clock. Chalk art starts at noon.

Parsons’ vacancy filled

To fill the vacancy left by the passing of John Parsons, the City Council Tuesday night appointed district 2 resident Doug Rodriguez as planning commissioner.

“There’s no grieving or mourning period for this,” Mayor Steve Aspel said of the unfortunate circumstances that warranted the appointment. “We decided to get right on it because there are important things in the city to do. I’ve known John [Parsons] a long time and he wouldn’t want us to just sit in limbo for a long time.”

Baleen joins Blue Zones

Baleen Kitchen celebrated its designation as a Blue Zones restaurant last Thursday. The Portofino Hotel and Marina restaurant is one of 58 beach cities restaurants to receive the designation, which indicates the establishment’s commitment to serving healthy foods.
