Sandbox: It’s a pocket park, not a workout facility
Sandbox
It’s a pocket park
by Mark Kemple
30th Street Resident, Manhattan Beach
In Manhattan Beach’s tree section there is a little pocket park with a little greenbelt and playground for kids. It was built in 1964 by the neighbors who surround it. It’s a pocket park. There are no traffic arteries leading to it. And there is no parking structure. Why would there be?
Harbor Lights: Pier Parking stucture past and future
Redondo’s city fathers traded style for utility when they replaced the Plunge with a parking garage for the Redondo Pier. The Plunge was built in 1909 by Henry Edward Huntington in a classic style with a grand portico and Roman arches. It was billed as the “largest indoor salt-water-heated pool in the world” and it […]
Calimex: An exceptional neighborhood haunt
There are times when I get so excited by the upscale and creative experiences around town that I run reviews after review on high-end restaurants. At such times, people ask, “Don’t you ever eat normal food like we mere mortals?” I do. Calimex has in business for over 40 years in the same location on […]

Fritz Coleman could have styled himself after Fritz the Cat, but instead modeled himself after the NBC weatherman. That’s why his show is called “On the Fritz,” and it’s in previews tonight through Thursday, which means that tickets are a few bucks cheaper: $35 now. Opens Friday and closes Jan. 31. He’s a funny guy! Hermosa Beach Playhouse, 710 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach. 310-372-4477. hermosabeachplayhouse.com.
South Bronx to South Bay: Not enough dots
Damn it. Just when I was ready to book my winter getaway, some blockhead with a bomb in his boxers tries to blow up a plane.
Letters January 14, 2009
Save Sand Dune Park Dear ER: On Tuesday, January 19, the Manhattan Beach City Council will decide the fate of the Sand Dune. As operator of the SandDunePark.com website, I have received literally hundreds of emails in support of keeping the Sand Dune open for recreational purposes. Perhaps most surprising, I have been heartened to […]

A sweet sailor fades into the sunset
Ed Neubauer was many things to many people. To thousands of kids he taught over the course of 36 years in the Hawthorne School District, he was a relentlessly upbeat and encouraging figure in their lives, one who took groups of kids on camping trips, helping bring a sense of self-sufficiency to many at-risk students. […]
They walk the line
It’s the kind of story Johnny Cash would have liked. It’s about a guitar, an underdog, and a beat-down dream. And it begins at a campfire in Mexico.
Two found dead after relationship goes sour
A young couple was found shot to death Sunday after what authorities suspect was a murder-suicide prompted by a romantic break-up. Police believe that Michael Nolin, 24, shot and killed Danielle Hagbery, 22, before turning the gun on himself. A joint investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Manhattan Beach Police Department indicates that […]

Burglars bob for Apples
Apple store customers in the Manhattan Village Mall have recently been targeted in a string of vehicle burglaries that stretches across three counties.
“We think customers are being surveilled while they buy computers, put them in their cars, and drive to the next retail store or their homes,” Manhattan Beach Police Detective Sgt. Brian Brown said. “When they come out, their cars are broken into and the computers are stolen.”…
