Beach business – Lazy Acres makes waves in Hermosa

Lazy Acres Natural Market opened in Hermosa on Oct. 13, with a special “apple biting” ceremony (instead of a ribbon cutting) earlier that week. South Bay residents descended on the store in droves, drawn by its organic produce, natural health products, prepared foods, and “The Cookie,” a fresh-baked treat that seemed to find its way into every other shopping cart. The Hermosa location, which is the chain’s fifth store, also carries products from Laird Superfoods, named after famed big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton. The company’s goods are intended to mimic those in Hamilton’s diet, which the famed surfer credits for his performance and longevity. On the evening of the 13th, Lazy Acres and Laird Superfoods hosted a dinner at the beachside Hermosa home of Chris and Gwen Kilkenny, where John and Michele O’Connor and city officials were treated to a five-course meal from Hamilton’s personal chef, featuring products available at the store.
