Avenue A ramp closed

Los Angeles County has closed the Avenue A beach ramp to replace it with an ADA-compliant ramp

The county made the announcement just before Thanksgiving. The change follows an October engineering report by the county’s Beaches and Harbors department which called for closure and replacement. The report deemed the long, steep, narrow ramp a “public safety hazard.”

Before the ramp is replaced, plans must be approved by the California Coastal Commission, which can take up to a year.

The nearest beach access ramps still open are at Knob Hill and Avenue C.

King Harbor amenities input phase begins

A process to gather public input on what is to become a new King Harbor public amenities plan begins this week at the first of two pop-up sites, followed by a (virtual) community meeting Dec. 15.

On Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Veterans Park Farmers Market, representatives of SWA Group landscape architects (Los Angeles) will be on hand as part of Phase One “Launch & Listen,” part of a four-phase process to create a draft public (recreational) amenities plan for King Harbor. Another pop-up is scheduled for Dec. 11.

The Redondo Beach city council hired SWA in August to study the harbor and develop a plan to improve it. It focuses on Seaside Lagoon, Moonstone Park and the International Boardwalk.

Items on the list to consider include a rebuilt sportfishing pier, commercial areas, a boat ramp location, and separate hand launch for kayaks and paddleboards.

SWA Group’s work will advance toward public hearings in March.
